The entire world including Nigeria is composed of different societies. Some are heterogeneous, some are homogeneous. Some are envious, some are ridiculous, some are professional, and some are technical, while some are theological. All these social activities are simply to make a living. St. Paul says “If a man does not choose to work, neither shall he eat” (2 Thessalonians. 3:10) Weymouth.
Every social activity should be satisfying enough as you find yourself in it. Different people are called for different assignments; one may be a bricklayer, a shoe maker, a driver or a politician, everybody should be satisfied with his talent. They are all honorable before God. This shows that God created men with different objectives and talents
In Nigeria, there are several professions, we have soldiers, traders, politicians, teachers, doctors, engineers etc. Among these professions the most ridiculed is the teaching profession. They are mostly the poorest in the society. Their salaries are paid only when the government has surplus money than to spare. They are owed salaries up to 4-6 months. They are the brain group of the society, yet they are being neglected, abused, and not cherished in the society or in the family nor even in the community. Young ladies refuse to marry teachers for fear of poverty. Yet they are the most conscious set of people in the society.
We have heard stories of soldiers, politicians, big tycoon traders, false clergy men, policemen etc, who were caught in Armed Robbery or stealing. Truly, all the segments of the society have been caught in Armed Robbery or sponsoring armed robbers, except the only neglected, dejected and humble classroom teachers of both primary, secondary and even tertiary institutions.
Teachers are self satisfied, and they look upwards for their daily bread. Teachers’ seldom stain their names for evil. They avoid serious ills of the society. They live according to there means. They are not easily influenced by the super-rich neighbors around them. So long as they remain in the teaching profession, they wash their hands off from excessive wrong doings like: Killing of human beings for rituals, defrauding government and other forms of vices.
They live with their conscience as they die in poverty. But there is one thing that is certain; the homes of these teachers who tested less crime continue to light the society from generation to generation.
